Bigger. Faster. Stronger.

The greenBull 5X Heavy Duty CNC is a fully equipped CNC machine kit that will allow you to mill full length 5' x 10' sheets. So if you're milling Baltic Birch that comes in standard 5' x 5' sheets, this is a perfect machine for you.

The 5X is designed to go well above and beyond what is usually expected out of a budget-priced CNC. The cutting area of 5'x10' is generally much larger than what you'll find in this target price range. The heavy duty gantry is designed to take a pounding day in and day out.

The greenBull series, like all our machines, is American-made in the great state of Texas. Whether you're looking to automate the process for general woodworking applications, cabinetry, sign-making, construction, or milling other material like acrylic or light aluminum, the greenBull has the power to significantly reduce your production time.

Technical Stuff

  • The greenBull 5X features a standard travel size of 5 feet by 10 feet.
  • Actual table dimension for the 5'x10' are 67.3587"x145.5" (the overhang in the illustrations should be 3/4" thick)
  • The overall design has increased rigidity for the new routing/milling area but still maintains the aesthetics that are common across all of the machines on this site.
  • To guarantee that the gantry doesn't flex at all, a series of ribs were added within the gantry box making the entire gantry very similar to a torsion box.
  • The motors selected for all of the axes are NEMA 34 with 1/2" shafts (driven by 6.0 amp drivers).
  • The dust shoe is redesigned to provide better dust extraction capability.

Important Things to Know:

  • The entire machine kit will take about 10-14 business days to produce and send out under normal circumstances. During busy periods this could increase to 15-21 business days. You can always contact us for an accurate estimate before purchasing. Assembled Machines will take longer as they have to be produced to order. Expect a lead time of 3-4 weeks for assembled machines.
  • We include a standard amount of 50 feet of motor cable for the greenBull 5X. The recommended length is for systems in which the computer will be placed right next to the machine. If you plan on having the computer further away from the machine you will need to purchase longer cable lengths. If you are unsure about how many feet of cable you need, please call or email us and we will assist you.
  • If you are purchasing a 2.2KW Spindle with Inverter, Laser Attachment, or both, you will need a water cooling system for each. This is a simple system using silicon tubing, a water pump and a 5 gallon bucket
  • The Spindle will require 12/3, 14/3, or 16/3 gauge cable for wiring from the inverter to the wall. You will also need 4 conductor wire for wiring the Spindle to the inverter as a 4th wire for ground is needed. It is important to understand the electrical requirements for wiring the Spindle, so for this reason we strongly recommend you check with a licensed electrician before attempting to wire it.
  • Table (Frame) Dimensions:

    • Actual table dimension: 5'x10' is 67.3587"x145.5" (the overhang in the illustrations should be 3/4" thick)
    • To determine the frame dimensions, first consider using the frame height shown of almost 3' (2.86'). The width of the frame should be 4" narrower than the dimension from rail edge to rail edge (5X rail to rail is 67.3587"). This will provide a 2" overhang on both sides (5X frame width should be 63.3587").

    • The length of the frame should be 4" shorter than the desired length of the rails to provide a 2" overhang on both ends. The travel length will be 20" shorter than the rail length due to the space occupied by the gantry sides.
    • Two long pieces of 3/4" material will need to be placed on top of the frame with the 2" overhang on the sides and the end. These long strips of material will receive the rails and the chain mounts on the ends.

Accuracy and Precision The resolution per axis is variable as you can change the driver's microstepping, but I typically set the parameters so that the mechanical and digital combination configuration yields greater than 1000 steps per inch. The x and y axes mechanical systems are based on roller chain which is tensioned. This provides a reduction in backlash, so the precision is very good (repeatability). The accuracy is generally based on how well the machine in calibrated and squared. Squaring is very simple as the gantry is squared by a combination of adjusting the roller chain sprockets on each side of the gantry and the adjustment of the gantry back hardware. Once the machine is squared and in a relaxed state, the hardware is tightened to maintain square permanently. Calibration is done through software and is as accurate as the physical measurement system is.

The front of the gantry is fastened with the top and bottom supports of the gantry. The ribs are fastened to the interior of the gantry. The y-axis rail support is fastened to the gantry front. Use only the number of ribs that are provided in the kit. There will be space for more, but they are not needed. The gantry sides are installed after the ribs.
10
Step 10
The z-axis components are assembled, which includes the structural components of the z-axis length and rail supports and the router mounts.
11
Step 11
The y-axis rails are installed onto the y-axis rail support piece that is at the front of the gantry.

Step 16
The z-axis assembly is installed between the bearings of the z/y plate. The z-axis motor mount is fastened to the top of the z-axis assembly. The z-axis mechanical components (bearings, collars and anti-backlash nut) is added to the assembly through the motor mount and the bearing support. The z-axis motor is installed onto the z-axis motor mount. The gantry is slid on the table rails.
17
Step 17
The x-axis motor is installed within the interior of the gantry. The shafts that extend to the gantry sides that hold the drive sprockets are coupled to the x-axis motor. The roller chain is routed below the idler sprockets and above the drive sprocket and tied to the ends of the table to the chain mounts. Instead of using the hose clamps to tie the ends of the roller chain, #4 screws and nuts are used.
18
Step 18
Wiring from the motors to the drivers is explained.
19
Step 19
This video shows the mounting of the router. We highly recommend the use of a water cooled spindle for four main reasons: there is no flow of air to blow the chips around the shop and vacuum is more effective, the noise that a spindle makes compared to a router is considerably less, there is constant torque throughout the cutting process (routers will bog-down when making deep cuts), and generally, spindles will last far longer than routers making the spindle a less expensive option in the long run. Check this video to see the spindle in action. The machine is completed with the fastening of the gantry back.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • Dear Sir or Madam, I'm looking for high quality and reliable CNC for my shop and I can find that the greenbull 5x is suitable for me. Would you please clarify where the hardware items are made, and how reliable will the greenbull be. Take into consideration that I'm outside the US, so buying spare parts from you should be planned long before and unexpected maintenance would stop our work.

If you purchase the assembled machine (which we highly recommend since you are outside the US) the entire system is tested, so you will not need any replacement parts. We have used motors and spindles on our machines that work constantly and daily for many years. These items still work to this day.

  • Dear Sir or Madam, I wonder how much the greenbull 5x shipping will cost to Lebanon.

To determine the shipping cost of a machine (i.e. greenBull 5x): - You can add the greenBull 5x to the cart by going to the machine page and clicking on the add to cart button - In the checkout process, enter your address and then click on get shipping rates. You will be presented by a list of shipping costs to your location.

  • connect vaccum on grennbull

The greenBull has a 2" hose mount on the z-axis assembly. Route your 2" vacuum hose through these mounting positions at the z-axis and fasten enough length to the end of the gantry making sure that the y-axis travel has sufficient hose to travel to both ends. You may need a hose extension. Additional Information: Additional Information: Additional Information:

  • Can you recommend which CNC machine to go with for cutting melamine and making kitchen doors from MDF. Also do you provide training on operating and setting up machine for shop production use? Thanks

All of our CNC machines can cut melamine. If your application (kitchen doors) requires large cutting area, then I would recommend the following machines: - greenBull 4x (4'x8'), 5x (5'x10') or 6x (6'x 12') - greenLean 4'x8' vertically oriented CNC machine - Or our Fabricator Pro 4'x8' metal CNC machine

  • Can you please clarify what a long Z axis table should look like? I've built a frame that matches the dimensions on the GreenBull page but under long Z it says a custom frame is required made out of steel, which I did. But do I need to have the frame open like shown in the picture or is that just showing what the table looks like under the 3/4 material?

There is a multitude of methods to create the table and frame for the greenBull long-z CNC machine, as some of the illustrations are shown on our gB webpage. The image with the hollow mid section, is a custom table that will take advantage of the entire long-z axis assembly. So the frame can be built in that manner, however the CNC table should have its 3/4" table top. So you can cut standard sheets of wood, aluminum, plastics, etc. So that specific illustration is not needed, however if you plan on cutting at that depth then it will defiantly benefit you to have that frame as shown in the illustration!

  • Can you explain exactly what is included in the green bull 4x package?

There are two main choices with the greenBull 4x product: the kits of parts and the assembled. The assembled version comes complete with the gantry assembled including all of the wiring and electronics already connected, the spindle hoses and all of the cables and hoses running through cable carriers. You will need to construct the table of the machine. If you need the table to be included, consider the new greenBull version 2: https://buildyourcnc.com/item/cnc-machine-greenbullv2-milling-laser The kit comes with all of the items of the assembled version but does not come with the wires and cabling.

  • Where can I download the USBCNC software? The https://buildyourcnc.com/files/CNCUSB_20130308.zip link is dead.

You can find the latest version here http://www.planet-cnc.com/index.php?page=download Additional Information:

  • Hi what is the maximun weight of a gantry that a Nema 34 651 oz can carry ?

The holding torque of the NEMA34 motor is rated at 651 oz-in. This is the maximum amount of weight the motor holds in a stationary position while optimal current is being applied through the driver. This is equivalent to 40.68 lbs per inch. Torque is measured from the center of the shaft. The torque applied to the shaft moving 1 inch is inversely proportional. For example: Moving 1/2" on the shaft has a maximum of 1302 oz or moving 2" has a maximum of 325.5 oz.

  • I'm assembling the gantry for a 5x10 greenbull and noticed that there are 9 spaces for torsion spacers but only 7 in the kit. Should I just space them out on the right side behind the motor?

That is correct. We send the fewer ribs than could be fastened within the gantry. One reduction of a rib will provide more space for the motor at the midpoint of the gantry and at the other side of the gantry (opposite the motor) can be reduced to provide more space to work with the coupling.

  • If I understand correctly, the greenBull kit comes with a spindle and laser. What else do I need to have a working machine. Obviously a table, do I also need the computer, software, wires, pump and plumbing, electronics, VFD, steppers and controllers?

The greenBull kit (not the assembled) will need the table (the rails for the table is supplied), wires/cables for the stepper motors and stepper motor drivers, smaller gauge wires for digital wire connections (limit switches, drivers to control interface, etc), wires for the spindle connection to the VFD, tubing for water flow to and from the spindle, and a pump and reservoir (we are just about to introduce a small pump/reservoir/radiator/fan system for use with the spindle. The VFD/spindle, stepper motors/drivers and interface board are included.

  • if i request for Grren bull assembled kit. i noticed it does not come with table. how about Torsion ? I am looking to buy one very soon. thnx

We are about to unveil the greenBull v2 which comes with the table and many upgrades. This will be available at the beginning of February. I would recommend waiting for that version.

  • I Was wondering if the green bull cnc machine is able to cut cured composites

You will not have a problem cutting cured composites using any of our machines. The greenBull short Z has a very rigid gantry and Z-axis assembly and can cut with better performance. You will need to make sure you are using the appropriate end mill for the materials within the composites. Additionally, the variables you will need to consider if the composites are thermoset or thermoplastic and the feedrate and depth per pass will need to be adjusted to make sure that the heat is is not built-up at the end mill causing the composite material to exhibit undesirable results.

  • I want to by a 5 by 10 foot kit, sorry, I don't have the time to read everything here. what should I be thinking about, Can you veiw my cart and tell me what else I need to get?

In regards to getting a complete plug and go system, there are a lot of items to consider. Electronics, DYI or one of our electronics kits that come assembled and tested? Cable for the motors is a additional purchase, spindle? = silicone tubing/water pump, etc. Cable carrier (wire management), software (also additional purchase). We can view your cart, but please send us your email and username to customerservice@buildyourcnc.com so it will remain secure!

  • I ordered the GreenBull 5' x 10' kit. The first video for assembly shows that I should have 5 large boards that attach to the table, but I don't have those boards. Is that something I need to build or were they not shipped?

We apologize for the confusion, however in the very first video that is regarding the assembly, is of the torsion box. We do not included that in any greenBull kit, as we use too sell it individually! However due to high consumption of materials and high cost(both in shipping and for the kit itself) we have removed it from our inventory and no longer sell it. This video can be skipped, however if you plan on making a DIY torsion box, this video will be helpful in your build! The torsion box is not needed, as the frame itself will be more than sufficient in keeping the machine from flexing or vibrating.

  • I have interest in some kit around 14' x 3.5' Can you supply? already have price? and what more I need?, my interest is modeling kayaks in CNC

Our CNC machines can be lengthened to work with our customers specific projects. For a 3.5' x 14' cutting surface, I would recommend our greenBull 4X! (4'x8'). You will only need to add the remaining length of rail(4) and chain(2) to accommodate the additional 6Ft, so this machine will have a cutting surface of 4' x 14'. The additional lengths for the x-axis travel will be a total of 28Ft, and 14Ft of chain. We recommend selecting all the items you wish to purchase and see the actual total in your cart.

  • I HAVE A SIGN SHOP AND WE NEED CUT ALUMINUM, PLEXIGASS, FOAM AND OTHER MATERIALS FOR SIGNS. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT MACHINE WE NEED? I LOOKING 4'X8' OR 5' X 10'

The overall size of the machine, really depends on both the area available to you and also the overall size of material being used. Now our larger machines (blackFoot, greenBull, greenLean) can cut all the materials mentioned above, and if equipped with our 2.2kW spindle you will be accurate up to ten thousandths of an inch. Our greenBull machine does have an option for a long-z axis, that was especially designed to cut foam, but depending on the overall size it might not be a requirement for the specified request.

  • I have a greenbull 5x Long Z. I thought I read that I would get the CAD files to the machine when I purchased it? I want to make a couple modifications. Thanks!

CAD drawings are not furnished with the purchase of a machine.

  • I am looking to build a cnc router that will cut 4x8 i wanted to get a cnc kit with some mods i was wondering if there was someone in sales that can help me

Yes, if you give us a call, we can definitely help you. If you are looking to mod one of our 4'x8' machines, we can provide those changes for you. We have experience with meeting customers' needs where their application requires a machine with small or even large changes.

  • I am looking for a 4'x4'x8" cnc machine kit... do you carry something like this?

Yes, our greenBull is the best machine to exhibit those dimensions. The 8" z-axis travel can be achieved by making sure that the table and bed of the machine will built with a depression that lowers the work are to the desired travel and clearance depth.

  • I am interested in the "Design Your CNC" page. However I need an extra long table. Is there any possibility of designing a custom 2' x 16' CNC, or can two 2' x 8' tables be combined some how?

Yes, we can customize almost any size of a machine. 2'x16' is within the possible dimensions. For a customized machine that you do not see in the "Design Your CNC" section, you will need to contact customerservice@buildyourcnc.com and make the request there.

  • I am interested in buying the greenBull 5X Long Z CNC Machine Kit, but it is not clear for me what is included in this kit. Is there anything else I need to get the machine work?

The greenBull 4X comes with all of the components and electronics to assemble the gantry of the machine. You will need to build the table. We provide the rails and roller chain for the X-axis (along the length of the table for full 8 feet of travel). You will need to provide some wire to connect the electronics and a computer to run the machine. You will also need to purchase the software that you will need to run the machine that matches how you will apply the machine. We suggest the mach3 control program. The CAM program is up to you as there are many options out there.

  • I am building your "Green Bull' 6 foot wide kit and I am at the stage of attaching the motor and drive chain. I would like to know if you have an modification kit available to put the 1/2" ACME screw on the Y-axis?

Currently we do not have that modification kit, our set up is fixed for our greenBull only modification kit we have for this model is the long z-axis kit(Designed for Foam cutting).

  • I am building the green bull. The video shows counter sunk holes for the 2" screws. However, my holes are not counter sunk. Had the instructions changed?

Can you tell me which part the countersink holes are located? When building the gantry, the first screws the video shows are to be counter sunk. However, there are no counter sunk holes on any of the parts I received. I have a picture I can send if you tell me where to send it. We are making the correction to this part.

  • How thick can the Greenbull cut and what kind of material? Wood, plastic, steel? I was also wondering if there is one anywhere in Nevada, Idaho or Utah that I could possibly see in action. Thanks

The greenBull CNC machine kit can cut as thick as a material as you desire depending on the reach of the end mill that you provide the machine, if it is a straight vertical. The reason for this is that each pass is incremental (multiple passes at a certain depth per pass). For instance, if you need to cut a 2 inch thick piece of wood, you can make, say 3/4" passes until the target depth of 2 inches is met. The depth per pass, feedrate and RPM will be determined by the material: wood, plastic, metal and will also be determined by the end mill that is used for that material. Selecting the appropriate end mill is very important. Feedrate and RPM is important to make sure the end mill is as cool as it can be during the cutting process. • How much for the (greenBull) larger "z" option?

We dont offer the longer z option anymore; however, we can fabricate a longer z assembly than the short version as per your specifications.

  • how can I convert the whiteAnt from the 3D printer mode to the CNC milling mode?

To convert the whiteAnt to a CNC machine, you will want to lower the upper structure to the lowest position to create the most rigidity overall. You will see that there are many holes below the sides of the upper structure that are evenly spaced. This is so you can adjust this lower. You will also want to fasten the lower sides to a substrate (piece of wood, or something) with l-brackets or something that has a bit of adjustment capability. This will keep the sides more rigid as well. Use a Dremel for the spindle. If you want to use a another spindle, let me know and we can product a mount for that spindle since the Dremel has poor runout (TIR). This is important if you are wanting really precise milling.

  • Hi, I intend on sculpting a surfboard out of a timber slab using the following kitset: greenBull 6x with Hybrid Laser/Spindle Head (includes Spindle/VFD and Laser Components) - USB Interface (Long Z). Will i need to purchase any additional items to have a fully operational cnc machine that is capable of carving the surfboard from a timber slab?

You will need to construct the table frame to your specifications and with a structure, fixtures and clamping to hold the timber that will be sculpted. You will also need the appropriate end mill that is designed to carve the timber. A dust extraction (vacuum) will be necessary to remove the dust and chips. Additional Information: Additional Information: Additional Information:

  • Hello how accurate is the 6.0amp stepper driver

If used properly our stepper drivers can be accurate as up to ten thousandths of an inch, be aware that certain numbers are correct in your setup, dealing with what you will be using as movement guides for your project or cnc! Being a sprocket and chain drive , lead screw driven, guide rails etc. and the correct micro-steps that will be used in hand with your drive system. Here is a tutorial video that can help in getting the correct SPI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vY26CIrVwg)

  • Have you had any vibration induced tube failure with your hybrid cnc mill / co2 laser setup?

We have not received any feedback on the Hybrid Laser/CNC indicating any issues with tube failure.

  • Have there been problems with the Greenbull stepper motors overheating? I'm considering adding a fan with filtered inlet and outlet on the gantry plus heat sinks on X, Y and Z.

The motors do get conditionally hot, because of the constant current going through the motor. The motors should not overheat and stall/fail they are built in the manner to withstand the constant current and heat. Modifying the machine to something that is considered a safe/personal machine is recommended for all our machines.

  • For our cnc we're searching for an air cooled spindle with 2.2 kw. On this page we've only found water cooled ones. Is it possible to get an air cooled spindle from you or do you have special reasons for don't selling them?

We like the water cooled spindles since they don't blow the chips around the shop. The air cooled spindles have a force of air that partly makes the vacuum and dust shoe non effective, unless we design a diverter, which limits the cooling effect for the spindle.

  • Do you offer custom sized machines? I am looking for a 5'x5' version.

Most of our CNC machines have the ability to be customized by length. The greenBull 5X for instance comes standard at 5' x 10' but it is really only the gantry width that is fixed. The length can be easily altered. If you are interested in receiving a custom quote, you can email sales@buildyourcnc.com.
